Restaurant technology is often discussed in terms of the systems operators interact with every day: POS terminals, kitchen displays, Wi-Fi, cameras, televisions, digital signage, access control, and other devices throughout the venue. Behind many of those systems is something far less visible but just as important—the structured cabling infrastructure connecting technology across the building.
Restaurant data cabling is not simply a collection of cables installed above the ceiling. It is part of the physical technology foundation of the operation. Where cable pathways are designed, where network rooms are located, how drops are distributed, how cables are terminated and labeled, and whether capacity exists for future systems can affect installation, troubleshooting, expansion, and day-to-day support long after construction is complete.

Even systems that appear wireless often rely on wired infrastructure somewhere behind them. A handheld POS device may connect over Wi-Fi, but the access point providing that connection still needs network connectivity and typically power from the network switch. A POS terminal located on an architectural plan may require data and power, but its final position should also make sense for the employee using it. A kitchen display needs infrastructure, but its placement also has to work with the kitchen line. Wireless access points need cabling, but their locations should be based on the network design rather than simply placed wherever a cable pathway is convenient.

Spare Capacity Is Part of Future-Ready Design
Restaurants change. A venue may add POS stations, cameras, displays, access points, digital signage, ordering technology, sensors, or systems that were not part of the original project.
